Which telescope for a child?
The right question is not the child's age. It is: who will set the instrument up, who will point it, and what will they see on the first night? Depending on the answer, the right present is a small tabletop telescope you will use with them, binoculars they can carry alone — or, for a few more years, just a planisphere and a trip under a real sky. What it never is, is the 'children's telescope' in the Christmas catalogue.
The short answer
- Under 7: no telescope. Light 8×30 or 8×40 binoculars, the Moon with the naked eye, a trip to see the Milky Way. Appetite first, instrument second.
- 7 to 10: a 130 mm tabletop Newtonian (130/650), €200–250, that you will set up and point with them. It is the telescope they will still be using at fifteen.
- 10 to 14: 10×50 binoculars (€60–120) they can take out alone, or the same tabletop Newtonian if there is a motivated adult at home. Both, if the budget allows — they do not do the same thing.
- 14 and up: the adult answer. A 150/1200 Dobsonian at €300–400 if there is room, and the general guide applies.
At no age: the €50–90 'children's telescope', plastic tube, plastic eyepieces, a tabletop tripod that shakes. It shows a blurry Moon and nothing else. The child is disappointed once, and that is the end of it.
What the child will see on the first night
This is the point that decides everything. A child does not compare the image with what an adult knows about Saturn; they compare it with the picture on the box. If the box shows a nebula in colour and the eyepiece shows a grey smudge, the telescope has lost, whatever it cost. Show them the Moon first — at a quarter, not full — because it is the one thing in the sky that looks like the photographs.
Second night, if Saturn or Jupiter is up: the ring clearly detached, the four moons in a line. Small, sharp, and real — a child understands very well the difference between a photograph and an object they are looking at. Keep the nebulae for later, and for a dark sky.
By age — and mostly by adult
Before seven, a child will not point anything alone and will not hold an eye on an eyepiece for more than a few seconds. That is not a criticism, it is motor skills. Light binoculars, held in two hands, show the Moon with its seas, the Pleiades, Jupiter's moons as points. That is already a lot, and it comes on holiday.
From seven to ten, the instrument is yours as much as theirs. Choose it for yourself: a 130 mm tabletop Newtonian sits on a garden table, is pointed by hand, needs no adjustment, fits in a cupboard. You will carry it out; they will look. That is exactly right.
From ten to fourteen the question becomes independence. 10×50 binoculars with a second-hand photo tripod, a planisphere, and the child does their own evenings. A telescope they cannot set up alone will stay in its box as soon as you no longer have the time.
Beyond that, they are a beginner like any other, with shorter arms. The 150/1200 Dobsonian is heavy for a teenager but not too heavy; the 130 mm tabletop remains the answer if space is short.
By budget
- Under €100: 8×40 or 10×50 binoculars. Do not look for a telescope at this price; there is no good one.
- €100–180: still binoculars, better ones, with a tripod. Or a 76 mm tabletop Newtonian (76/300), which shows the Moon and Saturn honestly and fits in a bag — the smallest real telescope.
- €180–250: the 130 mm tabletop Newtonian. The best present on this list, by a distance.
- €250–400: the 150/1200 Dobsonian, if the child is over twelve and the house has the room. Otherwise the 130 mm and a good 8–10 mm eyepiece with the difference.
If you are hesitating between two prices, take the cheaper one and a book or a star map with the difference. A child who can find Saturn with €80 binoculars observes more than a child who cannot find anything with a €400 telescope.
What not to buy
- The colourful €50–90 'children's telescope' with a huge magnification printed on the box. Blurry optics, a tabletop tripod that vibrates, unusable eyepieces. The worst possible purchase, because it puts them off.
- The 60–70 mm refractor at €99–129 advertised as '525×'. Better optics than the toy, but a poor tripod and eyepieces: the Moon properly, the rest with frustration. If you are given one, use it on the Moon; do not buy one.
- Any telescope on an equatorial mount (EQ1, EQ2) for a child. They will not understand it, neither will you on the first night, and it shakes. Alt-azimuth or Dobsonian, no exceptions.
- A €450+ 'smart' telescope for a child under twelve. It is a phone-driven camera with no eyepiece: they will see a screen, not the sky. Later, perhaps; not as a first instrument.
The first three outings
- Outing 1 — the first-quarter Moon, ten minutes, that is all. Have them look for crater shadows along the day-night line. Go in before they get cold.
- Outing 2 — a planet if there is one (Saturn in autumn 2026, Jupiter and Mars in February 2027), otherwise the Pleiades at low power. Let them point it themselves, even if it takes five minutes.
- Outing 3 — a dark sky, out of town, without the telescope: the Milky Way with the naked eye, binoculars for Andromeda. It is the outing they will remember.
Buy no accessory before the fifth outing. No Barlow, no filter, no extra eyepiece. By the fifth, you will both know what is missing, and it will probably be a chair.

- Is an €80 telescope for a child worth it?
- No. At that price the optics and the tripod are poor; the child sees a blurry Moon and gives up. The same €80 in 8×40 or 10×50 binoculars shows much more, without the frustration.
- What will my child see in a telescope?
- The Moon with its craters and shadows, Saturn's ring, Jupiter and its four moons, star clusters. Not the colour nebulae of the photographs: the eye does not see colour at these light levels, whatever the telescope.
