Do you need a GoTo mount for a first telescope?
GoTo means what it says: type an object's name, two motors bring the tube to it and keep it there. It is real and it works. The question is what you pay to have it, and the answer is aperture: at €500, the motor replaces about half the mirror. For most visual beginners that is a bad trade. For three specific profiles, it is the right one.
The short answer
- To look, with €300–500: no. A 150 or 200 mm Dobsonian with no motor shows more than a motorised 102 or 127 mm, and pointing it yourself takes three evenings to learn with an app.
- From a city balcony, mainly the planets: yes, an alt-azimuth GoTo under a 102–127 mm Maksutov. There is almost nothing to find under a Bortle 8 sky, and tracking at 150× on a balcony changes the evening.
- For someone short on time, or with limited mobility: yes. Twenty minutes of observing without twenty minutes of searching has a value aperture does not.
- For deep-sky photography: yes, and equatorial, and that is where half the budget goes. But that is no longer a first telescope.
What no GoTo mount does: show more. It finds the object; what you see of it depends on aperture and sky, exactly as before. A GoTo under a city sky points perfectly at an invisible galaxy.
What a GoTo mount actually does
Two things. It points: after aligning on one or two stars (two to five minutes, once you understand it), it brings any of the 40,000 objects in its database into the eyepiece, more or less. And it tracks: the Earth turns, the object drifts, the motors compensate, and Saturn stays centred at 200× instead of crossing the field in a minute. For showing a planet to someone else, to a child, it is the tracking that counts, more than the pointing.
What it asks for: power (batteries or a 12 V pack, one evening's worth), an alignment every time out, a steady tripod under the whole thing, and some attention in the menus for the first month. Recent models align with a phone and drop the hand controller; the principle does not change.
What it costs, in aperture
Mounts from one catalogue, at a fixed budget. Around €450–550 you have a 200/1200 Dobsonian with no motor on one side, a Maksutov 127 on an alt-azimuth GoTo on the other. The Dobsonian gathers (200/127)², two and a half times the light. Around €300–380, a 150/1200 Dobsonian against a Maksutov 102 or a 130 mm Newtonian on GoTo: same ratio. The motor costs roughly half the mirror, at every rung below €1,000.
On the planets the gap narrows: the Mak 127 is an excellent planetary instrument, and motorised tracking is pleasant there. On everything faint — nebulae, galaxies, distant clusters — aperture wins, by a distance.
Does pointing it yourself take long?
Less than people think. On the first night the Moon and a planet are found with the naked eye. By the third, with an app that shows the sky when you hold the phone up, you hop from star to star to Andromeda or the Hercules cluster in a few minutes. After a month you know twenty objects by heart and the sky has become a familiar place. A red-dot finder (usually supplied) is enough; a €45 Telrad makes the exercise almost trivial.
What remains true: under a city sky, where you can see fifteen stars, star-hopping becomes a chore. That is the case where GoTo justifies itself even for visual use.
Alt-azimuth or equatorial?
An alt-azimuth turns flat and tilts, like a photo tripod head; an equatorial has an axis tilted towards the pole star, and a single rotation follows the sky. For visual use the alt-azimuth GoTo is simpler, lighter, faster to set up, and tracks very well. The equatorial has one advantage, but it is decisive for photography: the field does not rotate during a long exposure. If you are not photographing, the equatorial only brings weight, counterweights and a polar alignment to do every night.
- Visual, balcony, planets: alt-azimuth GoTo (AZ-GTi, NexStar SE, StarSense type). €300–700 with the tube.
- Visual, decent sky, the most aperture: no GoTo. Dobsonian 150 or 200.
- Deep-sky photography: equatorial GoTo (EQM-35, HEQ5 type). €700–1,200 for the mount alone, before the tube and the camera.
- Planetary or lunar photography: any mount that tracks, even alt-azimuth; short video tolerates field rotation.
The three cases where it earns its price
The city balcony, because there is nothing to star-hop by and the planets, the only thing to see, gain a lot from tracking. Short time or a tired body, because bending over a finder for ten minutes is not given to everyone and the motor replaces exactly that. And photography, where the question is not whether but which.
In the other cases, the best use of €250 of motor is €250 of mirror. You buy the motor later, when you know what you want to track; you never buy aperture later without buying the whole telescope again.
